Normally I don't buy beds but this high back had an interesting design on the top panel. I was curious if anyone recognizes it? Usually late Victorian/Eastlake has the incised motif but this design doesn't seem to fit that? Numerous board back that does show some age. I could not get a picture of the back because it is top heavy and I had no one to help me turn it around. Any thoughts? IMG_3966.jpg IMG_3973.jpg IMG_3968.jpg IMG_3969.jpg IMG_3970.jpg

Looks a bit Scandinavian to me?
You said it's heavy. Is it teak?

Some looks like oak, but not an oak I am familiar with.

I know pictures can be deceiving but are you sure it is a double? Looks so narrow I think it looks like a twin size.

    Pretty bed!

It might be a twin - maybe the high back is deceiving to me regarding the size. I'll have to measure it when I can get back up to my property's cargo container.

The wood may be ash. Decoration is a bit unusual. Can't say it fits anything other than Victorian. The incised carving is called spoon carving. Spoon carving is sometimes associated with Eastlake. Here is a more typical example.

Thanks Brad - you are right - this may very well be ash. I just assumed oak.

It looks like white oak to me. Unusual, though (sorry) not especially inspired, carving looks like a provincial job. Nice warm, golden tone. Not queen but 1 1/2 today, yet back then beds were indeed smaller.
