    4.jpg 5.jpg 6.jpg 7.jpg Good Morning
I have acquired the Toby Jugs (photos attached ) from my late uncle, sadly they are not for us but I would like to keep say 5 of the rarest to remember him by. Can anyone advise which ones to keep or are they all about the same.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Sorry but there are some duplications of the photos, which I could not delete.

    Regards

    Barry

My (wife's) experience, bought at auction, sold ditto, lost money. don't count on them retaining, accumulating value. Enjoy them, but don't expect income from them.

I don't collect them but just generally, Toby jugs usually are full body while head jugs are usually called character jugs.

They are made by many different makers with the Doulton ones well known. Identifying them individually and checking sold prices may be your best bet though someone here may know.

The one on the far right in the last photo is the Mad Hatter.

Doulton products will be named on the bottom as to whom they represent.

Exactly. These look like Doulton and the maker's stamp on the bottom will have the title of the design. Makes it easy to look up on Ebay and just be sure you are comparing similar bottom markings/size of piece when you check prices. If no one here can pick out any higher value ones if any, go under "Completed/Sold" Ebay auctions to see which sold and for how much.

These used to be quite collectible with nice resale value, but prices have tanked.

I was in an estate sale three years ago and they had an entire fireplace mantle with the large Toby character mugs, pristine condition. Ones that formerly would have sold for quite a bit of money 25+ years ago. The estate runners were asking $15 a piece. Those mugs sat several hours into the sale untouched, even with hundreds of dealers and resellers having gone through. Changing tastes, not sure.

I have sold many, many Royal Doulton character jugs. I f you are patient, you might get up to $30 apiece for some of them. Like the previous post says they go for very low prices in estate sales. Most of mine I got for under $10, and a lot of the small ones were picked up for $2 or so. 20 years ago they were a fairly hot item.

I would keep the Mad Hatter, and the one of Catherine of Aragon. Other than that, its pretty much equal fron what I see.

In the second photo, the 2nd from left might be Merlin. I think I would keep the figure wearing a turban with a parrot on his shoulder. (last pic, center right)

    Some really nice ones there.
I wonder if the one with the wig and the quill in the second photo is Samuel Johnson (Dr Johnson)? That would be one I would keep.
