Salvador Dali Gold Medallion

A family member said thus was given to them by Dali himself. Its dated 1950. Can anyone advise of its value

i.e., what's the Karat and weight, all told, unless different Karats....in that case, specify the weights for each Karat........that coin doesn't look like it comes out of the casing so they might be the same.....but the chain could be different....

 

Its 18 karat plated. Its heavy

Do you have any evidence that it was really handed to your relative by Dali himself?

 

So the medal is gold plated. What are the mount and chain? Gold plated as well?

Yes its leda and the swan. I have only my mother in laws word that it was given to my father in law Nothing in writing but she is pretty credible

 

The coin and the casing do not come apart

 

My father in law was an artist not in any way famous and in advertising. He knew a lot of people in the art world

 

Unfortunately, a verbal provenance adds nothing to the value. Here's a completed listing for a later casting from eBay you can refer to. It has more bells and whistles and that all important (not) Certificate of Authenticity.

Ive seen similar coins online but all are dated later. Im just wondering if this might be worth something because its dated early. May e its an original. I really dont know

 

You should ask your MIL to write down as many details of the exchange between your FIL and Dali as she can remember - when, where why, etc.

It appears that in the early 1970's, Dali had embarked on a collaboration with Philip R. Friedman, President of Silver Creations Ltd. It was from this collaboration that the Leda and the Swan medallion was born.


The COA indicates that the medallion was limited to 7,500 in 18k gold over bronze; 2,000 in solid sterling silver; and 500 in solid 18k gold.

Most sightings of this medallion show it within a bezel, to be worn as a pendant, with an included pouch and a COA.

So @Alicats121 is number 1950 of 7500. Not the date 1950.

So the question begs.....would the earlier numbered ones be more likely to be solid gold, or, does yours, @Alicats121, actually SAY it's plated on it?????
