As we had a monsoon here today and the car boots were washed out I headed out to an appointment and just accidentally tripped into a charity shop on the way home.
This brooch was £1.50 and was screaming at me that it gold although I couldn’t see a mark.
Anyway it does test as gold, 9ct holds firm and 14 for a while before fading. Tbh it looks very hand made and quite rough in places but it’s the clasp that I’m interested in. It’s a roll over type but self closing as you push the pin down.
Does this date it or are they still being used today by students or ‘a man in a shed’?!
    Feels quite modern but WDIK!
    Thanks for looking :)

The clasp type is early 20th century.
The combination is odd, I thought that stippled back was later. Maybe someone else can enlighten us.:)

My thoughts too, the clasp is early, but the back looks a bit later. I suspect some local jeweller.

As in someone used an old pin on a modern brooch?

Someone who thought: "Brooch? I don't do brooches.... wait a minute, didn't my grandfather have a box with brooch clasps somewhere?"

That would be why the brooch was telling me it was modern but the pin was saying ‘I’m old’!
I agree, I think this was made by someone who doesn’t do brooches, or maybe a student as it’s pretty rough.
Maybe @Hollyblue knows when that stippling effect on the back was started?

It doesn't look like student work to me, besides, students would have access to new clasps through their college.
It is generally seen as a feature of 1950s-onward jewellery.
