Featured Friends, not sure if this opal ring is an opal or a doublet/triplet

    This explains it perfectly:

Many doublets and triplets are beautiful.
I would advise against wearing any opal during housework, or even washing your hands while wearing an opal. Opals contain water, and soap can get into them. Even triplets can become grey and dull because water gets in between the layers.

I have a small opal ring and I wear her sometimes but not when doing Stuff. ( I mean the boring *Stuff* here, not the more fun *Stuffs*, of which I have a surplus)

I don't wear her when doing anything watery, too scared.

    Thanks everyone,very grateful xxxx

Yes, I had a sapphire which was particularly abraded. I was very young when I had that and wore it all the time, I learned to takes things OFF if water was involved ( Pity I didn't learn it before) xx

Why are you scared? Australian opal cannot absorb water, acid will not harm an opal.

Mainly because of my previous experience with the sapphire, and it never hurts to be cautious...dunno what sort of opal I have but looks very susceptible to anything so as I said, caution wins

Yet to see a WHITE opal doublet or triplet (but I've not seen all opals:joyful:)...
The aim of doublet is to enhance opal to give it the look of a BLACK opal, idem for a triplet, using a thin slice of opal backed in black and domed by the upper layer:)
So, to me, this ring was a solid white opal! I agree it wasn't the most attractive, and you did well returning it if you weren't pleased with it;)

That's interesting, didn't know that...thank you Kyra xx

I didn't love her as I should, either, the top of the stone irl was quite rough. I wouldn't mind that if it was very cheap but this was too expensive I think to have any bad thoughts about it. The seller's very professional and has been great so all good xx
Thank you, this info is particularly useful Kyra xxx <3
