    Hi all

Found these 2 little oils in a charity shop yesterday

They have been reframed in a modern frame with glass front

Decided to take them out to look for a signature, but nothing

Appears who ever framed them cropped a large portion off, as without frames they are square, I think they were trying to hide a bit of damage to the edges, but think they look better in their original aspect, there's a colour variation now though

I'm thinking a good bit of age to them,

    Think they deserve better frames

    Any thoughts appreciated

Are you referring to that ship that has almost wholly (except the standard) disappeared to the right on the one? From what I can see, the cropping was sympathetic. 1920s newspaper. Why do you think framer preserved it?

Wonder if this was once one larger painting that has been cut down, with portions lost.

Nice. So you say there’s a colour variation? I was thinking they might be originally part of the same bigger painting.. That newspaper, clothes looks 1930. Any date?

Could well be a larger image. Would piece together. May well be a copy of somethin' since unlikely observed from nature.

I think we're both right. A cusper. Somewhere 'tween the late 1920s (when the bob came into fashion) into the early 1930s.

Yeah I mean colour variations on each from where the frame has been

All good observations, the only way I can see it being part of a larger painting is if there was a missing middle part, but the sea is a different colour on both

I think Deborah might be right that they may be single observations from another painting

Both measure exactly the same, and the edges do not look cut

No dates on the newspaper, might take them off to see if any info underneath

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I see the face in the boulder in the painting on the left, and I just plain love the little one on the right......to me they both look like the same artist.....I'm thinking the one on the right had more exposure to light and fading.......

Charlie, is there some sort of tape around the edges that has discolored?

Or perhaps, is it the adhesive from tape?

I see a definite yellowing that has occurred, wonder if tape was used to prevent damages, if when it was a larger painting cut down with a saw..? I'm pretty sure this was once a larger piece.

Thanks aqui, I think the ship one could still work as a single painting so that's not too bad

Hi anti, yeah it had a strong glued tape around it so it also might be some kind of adhesive that might clean off

I'm thinking now that it is a cut up so might be better put back in the frames

    Love them, charlie!
I agree, it was once one painting, and probably another part on the right. Is there some way you can put these two together in one frame? The wider view would make more sense.
There is the yellowing of course, you would have to find a way to get rid of that.

Thanks Aj, yeah I always love a stormy sea scene

It's a tricky one to know what to do with them as the rock one is a bit of a non entity on its own

The ship piece will work as is but would be a shame to discard the other one
