Featured Odd opaline look glass Schweppes bottle

hi folks

found this very odd looking Schweppes bottle today that has an opaline glass look to it

its obviously been open to the elements so perhaps mother nature has made it look this way by the sun and it is also warped. cant find anything else like it

usually when water is added glass bottles go back to its original colour, but this stays with this opaline colour even when wet

any thoughts appreciated

I think it was made warped like that! I like it a lot!

 

My bottles have more opal colours in them, but the base colour on one of them is something like yours. If I can find it, I'll take a picture and show you.

I belong to a bottle diggers group (yeah, I know, but we have an old bottle dump in the village) and they sometimes describe bottles as being ‘sick’ when they go cloudy. That said ,yours looks very opaline rather than sick but I’m no expert. Some are warped if they have been subject to heat in a dump fire but again I wouldn’t know how to tell the difference.
Google this type of bottle to see if opaline ones existed.

Yeah I suspect there's a bit of both of that going on with this bottle

Usually bottles go back to there original look when wet, but this stays in its strange colour

Perhaps not originally an opaline Bottle as I can find no other examples, but somehow the colour has been changed by its enviroment

 

Will give it a good clean tomoz, and see if that changes its appearance

 

found near the beach ? surface abrased by the sand and seawater.

The left one is water damage so as Fid said it could be that or a combination of fire and water.

 

Cool bottle. So what is the age of this?

 

I found a torpedo,Hamilton or amphora glass shaped bottle for a few cents (in dollars) the other day. Did a quick search and looks like a soda or mineral water bottle (pity no markings) from 1880-1890’s or so. Cool little thing. Not very valuable.. I understand that collectors want the bottles to be marked or branded.

Anyway the little bottle got me reading and there’s some serious bottle collectors and websites out there!

All of our local Sweet Springs Mo mineral springs Water bottles are that color Late 1800's. They are often irregular in shape because they were hand blown in to molds.

 

Yes,I saw examples on line. Handblown molds ones are some of the most valuable?

 

Despite the fact that it's out of round, I don't see any evidence of fire damage.

 

I have dug many bottles with that cloudy feature. I was told it was caused by minerals that leached out from the dirt when it was buried

 

How do you know for sure if a bottle is handblown and of that period? Top rim little uneven?
