Older bottles

Hoping someone knows bottles. Thanks for taking a look. These were at a thrift yesterday, hard to see in the photo, but the taller brown bottle has "M. Shaughnessy & Co, St. Louis" on the side, found a bit about that one, might have some small value on Ebay. At 49 cents a piece, thought maybe I could learn something - happy to donate back if not too exciting.

The two smaller (8.5") solid brown bottles have bubbles in the glass. One does not sit straight, ever so slightly round on the bottom.

The remaining tall one, just under 12" is sort of a dark green color. Almost looks gray/black but when you hold to light, you can see green. No markings, The base has a circle pattern.

Anything unusual in the group, or should I just donate the 3 unmarked ones back?

The bottom of bottles tell a lot about the age. Do they have a pontil on bottom? If they have a pontil they would be hand blown glass.

JMHO Take the bottles back, nothing worth even researching.

Lucile I had a dozen of those bottles and donated them to a friend of mine to use in his Western movie he is making.

 

Thanks for the link, and no pontils. I think the lot is going back -- a $2 in total experiment. I might try the Shaughnessy bottle on Ebay, not sure that is even worth the trouble. There is a small one on currently BIN for $39, no takers, but unsold BIN's only tell you how much it isn't worth.

Anyway, good to know -- get these back to the thrift!

But it got me thinking about some other bottles. These were dug up at the dump by a former neighbor in the 1970's, he sold them at his estate sale. I'll post later today in a new post.

 

When I inherited my bottles from my late FIL,I thougt I had a gold mine. I still love to collect bottles and saved the ones that looked unusual.

 

Here are a couple of my faves. I made the mistake last year of filling all my bottles with water to soak out the residue and placed on a bench. Well,we had a frost and about half of them burst. Maybe Greg can tell me if my Star Wine is junk?

 

I've sold a few of the old embossed drug/pharmacy bottles that I occasionally buy if I don't recognize the name on it. The last one I sold went to a descendant of the pharmacy owner named on the bottle. I love it when things work out that way.

There are two Star Wine bottles known. One is a rectangular shape and the other has a swirled neck. They are both clear. The rectangular example also says 32 OZ. on the front. Either way, they are both fairly scarce bottles but not real valuable. That's mainly because they aren't super old. There aren't a lot of bottles from L.A. that are super old but there are some and they are very highly sought after. They are both listed as being worth around $30. This is based on them being in perfect condition. The price can fluctuate depending on the buyer and when and where it is sold. There are some collectors of Los Angeles bottles and they are more likely to pay more than someone else. They were both made between 1903-10.
