Thank you, I'm going to do a bit of research on how to clean it properly and get the correct products you have mentioned I'd like to see the process first so I'm sure I'll find something on YouTube :)

Yes. To make bentwood items, the wood needs to be heated with hot steam, then left to dry in forms. After assembling, it would be sanded, then the chosen finish applied. This would all happen at the factory before shipping out to distributors.

Be cautious trying to match wood stain colors. I find it very difficult to get right. Again, try in an inconspicuous area first. I don't use Restor-A-Finish so I'm not sure if it actually dissolves the original finish or not. If it contains lacquer thinner, shellac thinner, acetone or alcohol, it will.

or did you mean after it was purchased.. at a later date by the owner? Probably not, spray lacquer is not an easy type of application for the average person.

Right ok... I think it might be best if I get a professional to do a basic clean up of it, I will ring around for quotes.

Sorry I wasn't clearer, yes this is what I meant. I thought maybe someone applied it at a later date after purchase.

Fischel worked with licences of Thonet. as did many others, Kohn etc..
they all worked exclusively with beechwood that was grown in plantations in the then Austrian part of Bohemia and Moravia; cheap workforce and good knowlege of tree-growing.

these hatstands are still found in abundance in old cafés and restaurants on the continent.
they were originally delivered in different colors, from "ebonized" black to clear natural.

Excellent, thanks for that :). Do you know what type of finish they used? Is it a lacquer?

Edgar, let me know what kind of finish you use, Howards restore a finish i think it meant to be very good but is it perhaps too strong. I saw a video on it and it looked almost like acetone, and quite strong. As your a Dub, you will be going to like woodies or somewhere so i am curious what you find. I heard of a product called Murphys oil. It is meant to be good but apparently leaves a yellow residue in the long term but would be ideal for your brentwood. A good wax might be the best.
