Featured How old and what style is this hutch top?

I bought this glass front cabinet on Facebook Marketplace for my son's records. At least I thought it was a cabinet, based on what I could see in the photos.
When DH got it home, I realized it is the top of a bigger piece of furniture. I'm curious to know what it sat on - a buffet? library table? Also, when was it made, and what is the style?
    It came from Laconia, NH.

Or maybe it had a stand with two drawers?

Book may be right. It may have just had a small stand to lift it up off the floor.

Thinking mahogany, ca. mid-20th century. Although it has a narrow neo-Victorian-looking crest, I believe this was a hobby piece for somebody. Looks to be good quality.

It needs a piece of wood or some feet to keep the doors from dragging on the floor. I bet it had something like a record cabinet under it originally, but it's a great place to store vinyl.

Hmmmm, Not a clue:oops:. Obviously, SOMETHING was below but I'd just be guessing. Likely drawers or cupboard, agrees on 20th century.

I blame hubby for failing to ask where the rest of the cabinet was! BAM!

    Well, so do I! :eek::rolleyes:

Of course, if I could have seen that it had no bottom, or if they had said in the ad that it was the top of something, I wouldn't have bought it. I just concentrated on getting the correct measurements, and having the young woman check to see if records would fit on the shelves, and if/when the shelves were full, that the doors would close.

Perhaps he could redeem himself by building you a short footed stand. dsc0512_2f855ad9-3721-440b-8a34-03674ee80b50_300x.jpg

I don't think he could build a stand to match. I'll settle for a wood bottom that I can stain to match.

Think this could have gone with a fairly sizeable base up to 30" tall. Something like this.

Would not be surprised to hear that the base got painted and was being used by the people that sold this to you. Tall hutches are nearly unsellable. The bases fetch a fair amount. Consequently, we see the tops for sale cheap, or roadside for free regularly.

That settles that then.:playful: I'm glad he does, at least you didn't go through all that for nothing. It is very useful for his records, and who knows, maybe he will need it for an antiques collection in future.

    Good thing too!
Your FIRST mistake was buying on FB, #2 was sending hubby to pick-up, one more strike & we will have to consider punitive measures!:)

I know, I know. But FB can have some great stuff! As far as sending DH to pick stuff up, I have tried to coach him - Any doubt, take pictures, send them to me, and call me before paying.
Apparently, he didn’t see the lack of a bottom as a matter for concern. :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:
