Well, turns out it wasn't hard to find a spot at all!

(btw the retablo is by Nicario Jimenez and the mask is by Glen Lafontaine... neither of those are antiques either, but what can you do)

What a terrible use of such a large piece of Haida Argillite.....
Oh, the design is nice.........but that piece could have been used to a much better degree considering where it comes from and how it's mined..
Unless it's full of cracks ...it should have made a carving...at least......not a scratching !

Huh. Someone once told me that argillite was nearly mined out in certain Haida places, and that that partly accounted for the high prices of totems. Is that what you mean?

The veracity is , without having climbed Slatechuck Mountain myself.......pretty much dead to rights..!

Mined out........not to my knowledge.

What I mean is , that piece is large enuf...if the slate is stable...to have carved several 3-D carvings.....as opposed to just a flat design.

Yes, the Empoli is 70s. That honeycomb and the frilly top is pretty typical. It's decent glass and fun.

Well the trip to the flea market wasn't that productive today. Too much junk and cheap imported stuff. Can't believe all of the vendors that apparently scratch a living off old games, vinyl, dvds/vhs, sports cards, other trading cards like Pokemon.

I got a few dvds, odds and ends, and the vintage fraternity mug from 1955 shown below.

Thanks for the interesting comment. I agree with you a 100% that provenance is key. Sounds like your friend had a very impressive career (very specialized and dangerous work doing salvage and recoveries) Those divers are something else! And he has a equally impressive collection to show for it. Wow! a porthole from the SS Egypt,that’s DEEP water and a crazy technical dive. There was a lot of gold and silver bullion on that ship (as you know)..

I have been Uber busy at work, miss you guys. I went to the flea market yesterday, got there a bit late, no great finds. Today we went to a biannual outdoor craft-antique show (mostly crafts) and the minute I saw this, I was done, stick a fork in me. Oak hall bench with storage, $200.

I am going to ask about it on the furniture board. We had to leave behind a round oak dining room pedestal table with lion heads on the bottoms of the legs. Sigh.

 

Wow,that’s crazy! What a job! They really walk the line. Definitely not ordinary and no wonder it’s so highly paid..

 

Very pretty. Like a monk bench design? My absolute amateur feeling is not that old. $ 200 seems a top end price to me (but just guessing here,don’t know $ prices) Looking forward to hear what the experts say..
