image_50405633.jpg image_50396161.jpg IMG-1256.jpg image_50438401.jpg This was my grandfather's, and might possibly date from the late 19th/early 20th century. (He lived in Chicago.)

Oil on canvas, signature (as far as I can tell) C. T. PAUL, in block letters. I can find no record of any such artist.

The canvas is quite loosely stretched on a somewhat rough frame.

    Very grateful for any help!

You have the Artist nailed correctly, as far as is visible & I can tell....I inverted & lightened it.... although first initial could possibly be a 'G' not a 'C' and there could be something after the last letter....but appears to be too much crackling to tell....others may be able to tell you more about the painting itself! WELCOME to ANTIQUERS, @HGW!!

Not having any luck with this. Not convinced the first initial is a C. Would probably date this to circa 1920. Quality frame. Possibly Newcomb Macklin.

Also not sure that CT PAUL
is what I see. On the painting photo it almost looks to me that there’s something after the ‘L’ (but probably only my imagination) As it is not visible on the lightened image.

Not really visible on the original image either, @Boland!

IMG_20210905_122118093.jpg Thank you all for these thoughts.

Here is a close-up of the signature. It does seem as if there may be (at least) one more letter after "PAUL"

No luck on this I’m afraid. I’m reading the name as GT Paule but can’t track down an artist.

Signature2.png Cattle grazing small.jpg I have found a possible, though by no means certain, identification: Paul Paul, British artist (1865 - 1937). I would be interested in hearing opinions on this

Paul has a similar style, though with a somewhat lighter effect (cleaning the painting might lighten it, however) and more open composition.

The signatures are close matches, but again imperfect:
-- Paul Paul signed the attached work P. PAUL, all caps (see attached close-up of the signature from the ).
-- In my painting, what I thought was a T is plausibly a P. This does not explain the initial letter there (C/G/?), however...

    I'm not sure...
