A beautiful reclining chair. It has lion claws on back legs. I am based in Malta.

I was told the wood is walnut

 

It is a planters chair, named after the colonials on the plantations in Asia. They could rest on the veranda at the end of the day, and put their glass on the extended arm rest.
Many planter's chairs had extra extensions which could be folded under the armrests.

I would guess the wood is tropical hardwood, but I'll tag @verybrad for you.

How interesting this is, do you think it actually had an extended arm? I have been told that the lion legs that make this particular...

 

I'm not sure, but it looks like there could have been, since the screw is visible. Could you post a photo of the bit where the screw is?

 

I'm still not sure, but Brad has been tagged, he knows much m ore about furniture than I do.
Forgot to ask, is there wear or scuff marks on the underside of the armrests, where an extension could have rubbed against the wood?

For my info how do you date it ?

 

I compared it to a few chairs that used to be my grandparents', so no 'secrets of the trade'. I don't even know if I am right though. The people I tagged before have far more experience with furniture dating and wood species.

 

Also called a plantation chair. Don't think this is walnut but some kind of tropical hardwood. Not the same as what is currently billed as plantation mahogany. I am not well versed enough to tell you what it could really be. Does have some age to it but hard to tell since have been made for decades. My best guess would be sometime mid 20th century, give or take. Think the carvings/details would be a bit better if it were earlier.

I wonder if it isn't the remnants of a deck chair that were refastened to make a chair for a veranda or porch.

 

I wouldn't know, but I guess it had to be a large chair to make such a big chair out of it.
