A short article on George Baxter and his printing process (names William Dickes as a licensee):
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Baxter_(printer)

    a couple of quotes:

"both Kronheim and Dickes were lithographic printers as well as wood engravers, and most likely mixed all of their printing methods together"

"it is often impossible to say exactly how a given colour print of this era has been produced"

A monochrome print, intaglio or relief, color applied with hand-inked wood blocks

Thanks mos, very interesting, sounds like an art form in its own right, compared to modern print processes

Managed to find the Baxter print I had before, it does look to be quite interesting in terms of how it was made

The process produces color quite well, doesn't it? Captures subtleties but lots of depth.

Perhaps armed with a loupe I wouldn't have bought them, but as its transpired I've learnt a great deal by getting these, especially about early printing processes and names within the industry

    So cool
