Hi, I wonder if this piece of Delft pottery is old? I think there was a clock mechanism there once, but now it's just a hole. There's a little open bin in the front - possibly to hold matches? I can't find any marks on it. It has a few chips, but the shape and illustrations are very nice. Any ideas of age and origin? It measures 10" high and the hole is 2 1/4" across. Thanks.

Looks like a number on the right foot?

Yes, a few numbers written in pencil. Hard to read.

Yes clean up the feet. Doesn't matter who made it, it's pretty. Find a replacement clock to fit. You could store replacement batteries in the open bin.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

IF you clean up that foot you might wash off that number....it looks more like it's in pencil!!

It is not a fake, you can tell by just looking at it that it isn't.

Probably dates to 1900-1910. A couple of German companies that produced items like this are: Rosenthal and Royal Bonn, but could be from other European countries like France or the Netherlands.

If you are keeping it for yourself and want to make it a working clock & have a period restoration, please do NOT replace the movement with a battery run quartz mechanism. It originally came with a wind-up movement.

If you are selling it, keep in mind that it is missing all of the working parts and there isn't a lot of demand for them on eBay. Value will probably be in the $20 range.

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaa keep it! Let's help him/her find a suitable 2 and a quarter inch wind up replacement clock.

Before going off half-cocked, perhaps you should wait to find out if NewEngland (she) wants to keep it and invest a substantial amount of money? Just a thought.

It is a cutie, New England.:) I guess the tray would have been for a key.
I agree, there is nothing fake about it, it isn't pretending to be Delfts. It is likely to be delftware, as opposed to Delfts.

I wonder if that isn't Portuguese. Look at the landscape and ship.

You didn't read that, did you, or look at what they sell?
As they say, they sell parts for Dutch clocks, mentioning the traditional Dutch styles, which this clearly isn't. This is a ceramic clock case, a type which was (and still is) made in many countries.
The movement was likely to be German, even if the case was made in the Netherlands.

Some traditional Dutch clocks, they sell parts for these clocks.

AJ, I think you're right - the little bin on the front is for the key. Thank you everyone!

Anyone who sells clock movements could. You don't need to bother a specialist seller.

New England is a she, btw. If you click on someone's avatar, you can see if it is him or a her.
