I was wondering if anyone recognizes this signature or can make out what it says. I think it's 19th Century 20210828_125739_copy_1209x1612.jpg 20210828_125714_copy_1512x2016.jpg

Any chance of seeing the painting and the back of the frame?

As a courtesy, would you be kind enough to show the full work both front and back including frame and shot from straight on? That would assist us in assisting you.

Beautiful painting, I love the style and colour. I would think 20th rather than 19th though.

In what region did you find it? What is the medium? (Oil on board? Canvas?) Have you deciphered what is written on the back?

I found this in Cambridge Massachusetts. It's oil on some type of thin wooden board. It says Sunset_________ unknown. I will take more photos in a few minutes.

My 'gut' reaction is that it isn't very appealing because it doesn't follow the "rules of thirds" - the top 1/3 is totally lacking of any character of design. You could crop the top part off and have a much nicer painting.

I see "S. J. Tryon" or a variation on same. I suspect the word following "Sunset" is the location. Could it be Gloucester?

Definitely knocking about Boston in the late 1800s. Oh, here she is... Born Portland, Maine. Studied with W. M. Hunt and Daubigny.

Wow this is great information thank you Deb and thank you all who helped. This is definitely a true Boston peice then the owners family has been in the home since it was established ans that hotel is a stones throw away. I do think it might be Gloucester Mass. I imagine at one time it did look like that. This will be an great addition to our New England art collection. I do see what you mean now about generations of smokers. The Tryon's are quite an illustrious New England family. 'Spect if you contacted them, they'd be able to provide more information about your painter. There's a Gloucester Museum and a Historical Society that might prove helpful.
