I have been storing some of my Grandmother and Mother’s things since they have passed on. I believe they are mostly hand made. Do you see anything possibly “store bought”?

I think my sister will let me get rid of anything bought. :D

    I have more to add.

    Thank you for looking. :shame:

The only thing that looks store bought to me is the printed fabric with an attached trim. The trim could have been added by hand at home.

    Thank you, Bookahtoo!

I guess I can’t get rid of much. :shifty:
    But I have the space.

The petit point linen hand towels look store bought to me. France or Belgium. The embroidered tea towels are store bought in that they were bought at the store stamped with the design which the customer would work at home.

    Thank you, Debora.

Some of these linens I like, but they just sit in a box. :(

Everyone has inherited stacks of this type of work. Hard to know what to do with it. Want to keep for sentimental reasons, of course, but require hand washing. And antimacassars, etc. aren't popular decorative accessories anymore (for obvious reasons.)

That one has a silver grayish thread on the basket, also very tiny stitches.

Add a nice photo of your Grandmother/Mother, butterflies, loose thread, crochet hooks, small nail scissors

    Fun pieces!

The first item (pillow sham) looks like it is the oldest of the bunch, hand embroidered and probably made from "stamped goods". Circa late 1800's - early 1900's. Photo #1-2

Photo #3-4 are hand done filet net - could be an import - but also could have been done by a family member... circa 1920 is common.

Photo #5-6 are hand done crochet

I agree with Bookahoo re: Photos #7-8 the printed item with the lace edge. The lace edge is machine made; no telling who made the piece/ with or without the trim. It does look hand applied... so possibly sewn on by your grand.

Photos #9-10 - also hand done crochet

Photos #11 - 12 - are they the same piece? If so, then, it is hand crochet - as #12 is.

Photos #13-18 - appear to be American style embroidery - often worked on stamped goods - real popular in the 40's and 50's. Often given as gifts to friends - embroidered by the giver... but often made for their own home.

I also agree with Debora re: the petit point tea towels. They were undoubtedly an import. #19

Photos #20 - 21 and the large unfinished basket of flowers also appear to be American style embroidery - often worked on stamped goods - real popular in the 40's and 50's.

As for the 2 framed pieces. My inclination would be to say that they were purchased goods, even though the crochet lace may be handmade. Items like this seem to pop up often at craft fairs and gift shops and often frame up import lace. It IS possible that someone had Grandma's crochet framed... but unless you know that she made a lot of crochet lace... it seems unlikely.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Leslie,

Thank you so much for all the great information!

Photos 11&12 are both the same piece, a large table cloth.

How would I clean these pieces?

The framed works are not mine.

Thank you sooooo much Leslie! The tablecloth is in the worst shape, very yellowed. I might start with the smaller pieces.

Yes, I agree, plastic covering would keep it clean. :)
