Late 18th century watercolour

I specialise in ceramics but could not resist these two unsigned watercolours when they turned up at a local auction.

I found an engraving “ Salmon Fishery Aberglaslyn” which is almost identical to one of the paintings and I wonder if this could be the original used by the engraver. The engraving is clearly marked JC Ibbetson.

I found another Ibbetson watercolour with the same characters spearing salmon.

The reverses have an auction Stencil GD857 plus chalk lot numbers and handwritten letters Stephen F Gooden 57 Pall Mall

SF Gooden was a celebrated engraver who died in 1955

Any thoughts on these lovely ink and watercolour studies?

 

Are you satisfied that these are not elaborately colored engravings?

It's my understanding that when a painting was reproduced as an engraving, the engraver worked from a reversed image rendered in grisaille.

 

Yes I've seen that one. Ibbetson visited North Wales in 1795 and produced a number of works.

 

The writing on the back is Stephen T Gooden 57 Pall Mall not Stephen F Gooden as I originally posted.

Here is his obituary. He did live (and died) at 57 Pall Mall and was an important art dealer .

Thanks. I mixed up Stephen F Gooden and Stephen T Gooden. Much better now it’s Stephen T as he lived at 57 Pall Mall and was an art dealer. All looking good but still no definite identification.

 

I also get the impression this is an engraving that was handpainted over. There are some common elementsof engraving in the pictures. That copper orange colour and the thick lines and the way the paint is used. I would think these are engravings that were coloured in by hand.

 

I’ve sadly not been active on the forum recently due to a charity project that is taking up a lot of my time but here is an update on this listing .
