    For everyone who followed this thread last year.
    @say_it_slowly might have been intuitively right from the start!
    Just found this site, which also mentions a book that describe then (and that i didn't see, but does seem to give more credence to the attribution.

    It says afghan animal pendant/amulet often holding a small muslim writing for extra protection. That also explaines the (filled up) holes.
