For future reference, the baking soda and aluminum foil method for cleaning silver is only recommended for pieces you don't care about. It's disastrous for anything old or good - wrecks the patina while removing the tarnish. It does great for removing silver plating down to the base metal though.

Thx. I usually use it on metals that are just really grimy. Then i read somewhere it was safe for silver so i used it --but i know I'm not supposed to believe everything i read...tired minds make the worst calls:(
Thank you for saving my future silver items! :)

If you need to get "greenies" off of metals, vinegar works nicely. So does ketchup. Slather it onto the green patch and leave alone. Wipe off later. Any applied finish under the green is long gone of course, and it can discolor bare brass.

I'm lost on the value of a screwed pin along its whole length, when at best it is only going to latch on one turn in the end ball. It appears to offer a false sense of security.

Left hand thread or right can only be for decoration as it is only functioning as a securing device at its end, and aesthetically it is hidden during the wearing of the bracelet.

Should work fine. Nitric acid has a shelf life of 2 years after being opened, if stored in a cool, dry space.

I've never been one to do that. Around here, people only trust that its silver if its marked on the piece itself.

Guess it depends on the customer base,I've made and sold hundreds of silver pieces with no purity mark,no one ever had a problem with it.

I guess it really is just a matter of customer base. It's like the unmarked Victorean 10k gold cuff links I have had for the last 3 years.

In the UK, even handmade pieces must be hallmarked or you can't call them silver.

I think they have to be sold as gilt metal or some such. In the USA there's no such limitation.

Correct in principle, but in practice artisans hallmark. It's virtually unsaleable as silver otherwise.

Not gilt metal but white metal.
