    ben1.jpg Hi everyone,
I hope you can help please. I've attached 2 pictures of some writing on the back of my benares table. The table itself is very old (picture attached just for info!) but I know nothing about where it came from or who owned it, just that its been in the family for many years. I guess the writing on the back might be the original owners name and price or date or? I'm thinking of selling the table soon so if I can identify anything from the markings it might help. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Best wishes,
    Jane.

This one on 1stDibs appears to have the same base, or at least very similar. Seller says base is Syrian and tray is Moroccan, c 1920's. 1stDibs dealers are not famous for their accuracy but this one is in Barcelona so maybe they know more about this type of furniture than your average American seller.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply. Gosh that one on 1st dibs is really similar. The fact they say it is Syrian does give me a clue - I had a Great Uncle who was based with the army over in Iraq back in the 1920s. I wonder if he hopped over the border or if they sold them in markets there and he sent it home? The 1st dibs one is crazy money - I was thinking more like £100!
Thanks again for your interest and help.

You're quite welcome. And don't let the prices on 1stDibs affect you too much. The dealers on there are targeting Jeff Bezos' and Elan Musk's interior decorators, not you and me. This table, also said to be Syrian, sold for $50 on liveauctioneers.

Indeed, another thing I notice is, no sold prices are posted which tells me a lot of horse-trading going on.

Hi, yes I quite agree about 1st dibs - interesting that there are no sold prices, I'd never noticed that. Thanks for finding the table that was $50 - much more the level I was thinking about!

These do show up in the UK a great deal. The ones with no inlay on the legs are usually Indian.

Looks like a hyphenated date with the second numbers being "22" and then a name , would fall into the Time period your Uncle was there ? Frustrating when there is something written and you just can't quite make it out .
