Hi all, I picked out these two pieces from an ebay lot recently and am hoping you can help me date them. They are both glass, the kilt pin isn't testing silver so my guess is pewter. The necklace in quite long, measuring 12" wearable length. Thanks as always :)

First, 12 inches is either Victorian or a kiddie necklace. Yours looks like a 24 inch or so and probably 1950s. To measure a necklace you go end to end. The pin actually does look Victorian, going by the hardware.

Hi, thanks for the info! I was going by wearable length from neck hanging down- I have seen this type of measurement used quite a bit in listings. But yes, you are correct, 24" total length.

I think the necklace is betwixt the wars Czech. Brooch is spot on late 19th. I've some very similar ones in the Hoard. They seem to be chromed metal.

Love the pin, I see that "straight pin fix" on a lot of old pins with that tube hinge :)

I see these repairs too & never had a term for it. "Straight pin fix" is perfect. Thanks. :)

Maybe I'm looking at the photo wrong, but is it possible the chain part of the necklace is not original to the piece? The pendant and clasp are sort of a brass color and the chain looks silvertone. Certainly works, just wondered if original?

    Nice pin and pin fix!

I think it may just be the lighting in the photograph. The chain is showing signs of wear though so you're right that there is a silver tone metal showing through the gold/brass tone coating!

If the chain is also a brass-like color, probably good. Must be lighting in the photo then. :)

I should have said: it's not a kilt pin, those are generally giant safety pins. Plaid brooch is probably best as a description. Neat mend on it.

Ahh, thank you! I've seen similar described as kilt pins so I'm glad to know that that's not quite correct.

And the occasional tight-waddedness? To coin a word? :joyful::joyful::joyful:

I can't drink any more, not being fond of falling down, but ... right now I'm bloody jealous. Single malt... Now there's a thought - has anyone ever made an Italian-style ice out of single-malt?

I've made a sorbet with marc, which is a type of cognac made from waste grape skins from wine making. It was rather fine but a devil to freeze.

High alcohol content. Bet it would made a great slushy though.

It was pretty well a slushie, and a fine one. In Catalunya, they serve lemon sorbet with cava poured over it. Yum.

Right now I could go for that, but I'll be getting a glass of milk with my dinner and sigh.
