Evelynb30, I have the same bookmark which I found about 20 years ago at the estate sale of an elderly woman. At that estate sale I also found a lovely MOP letter opener and a beautiful MOP dip pen.

I could have spent much more time in her home looking at all the wonderful old items, but in asking the woman who was running the estate sale at the home a bit of background on the wide array (including many old, foreign items) of things for sale she told me that the woman had never married and had been a foreign missionary for almost all of her adult life. The woman had come back to her home to die from a tropical disease she had contracted while serving as a missionary in South America.

I don't think the bookmark is unique in any way; it's some kind of souvenir piece. It came from an estate sale too. Oddly, I'm on the Missions/Outreach Team at my church; I've known lots of people who spent a lot of time out of the country. Most of them weren't accumulators. One spent time in Iran and didn't have a single piece of Persian jewelry. I fixed that... :)

I should have been clearer in my posting. I don't think and didn't mean to imply that the two MOP items or the bookmark were from her time out of the USA as a missionary.

I think the MOP dip pen and small MOP letter opener were from her young(er) years or perhaps older family items. The MOP dip pen has a USA nib marked "B. Grieshaber Chicago 2."

Definitely American. Probably from an old desk set. I have one of those around somewhere too.

I take it the painting is worth a little more than $11? :pigeon:

I believe it's safe to assume this would be the case. :)

The research I've been able to dig-up so far... some of his works are housed in a couple prominent museum collections, a 2007 exhibition of his works were shown at a noted art gallery in Kyoto, Japan and a couple of books/catalogs of his works are held in institutions such as the Smithsonian and others abroad. (see images/links below)

Now, as far as what his pieces are worth in the current market, not 100% sure. The art gallery that held the exhibition back in 2007 has one of his originals for sale (#28), but no price attached to it. I've seen a couple of pieces made after his most noted original with asking prices at or around $400+ If I'm not mistaken, my piece dates to the 1920s - 30s. Hopefully with a bit more research I'll be able to nail something solid down.

Not a new find...but I was watching the Antiques Roadshow last night and seen this: http://video.pbs.org/video/2365423158/

I immediately said to myself -- "oh, I have one of those!" -- a much larger version of the box any way. Purchased it last year from a "young-buck" if I recall correctly for $5. She said once she finds the "glass" she'll give us a call,...but never did. :( Oh well, something is better than nothing. I assume since it's a much larger original box then the one shown in the appraisal, it's probably worth double what the appraiser quoted?

I was flipping between commercials last night and caught a few minutes of Roadshow. In those few minutes I was horrified by a couple appraisers numerous mispronunciations of words nearly anyone should know.

    Hi,
They were showing stuff from the 1960s and 1970s. They would not show Fiesta since it was only from the 1930s.

Very pretty! I love the wire cloud forms on the sides. How old do you think?

    Thank you both.

Not very old. My guess would be first half of the 20th C.

Marked 'SILVER' and with the former owner's full named scratched into the base.

    Hi Nuff,
I think your Steuban piece box is NOT the 18kt heart and key but the sterling siver Excalibur in the rock piece. it is beautiful. Great little Chinese box.
