One last go- help with Artist ID-Italy

So I have posted about this painting before in the Art forum section but unfortunately had no reply (yes I know probably not a great sign,or maybe my timing was just poor) Anyway so I thought I will try here. Does anyone perhaps recognize this signature? It ‘s on a painting of the St Angelo bridge bought in Italy about 60 years ago. Any ID guesses? Thanks all

 

Not without a photograph of the entire work including frame both front and back. Could well be a souvenir painting in which case of artist may not be of great import.

I noted there were some
well placed scratches on the painting. A Painting technique called Sgrafitto in Italian

 

You're welcome Boland. I don't recognize the signature (C. Montaga?), but I do like the painting.
It reminds me of my university trip to Rome, where the shores (and island) of the Tiber and the surrounding area were my favourite. In the evening I would usually end up in one of the cheap restaurants in Trastevere ('across the Tiber'). In those days Trastevere wasn't as touristy as Rome proper.

Montaga (and some other versions as I was trying to figure this out) Sounds like you had a lovely time in Trastevere (I had to google it “a colorful,funky,bohemian area) Sounds wonderful!I love your soulful description (and with the photo I can just imagine it) We when to Italy 3 years ago (yes,doing all the tourist things,so it felt almost crowded) I like Rome and Venice. Next time Sicily and lunch/dinner in a cheap restaurant in old school Trastevere Rome.

Be sure to visit a little gem many tourists pass by, the 'Santa Cecilia in Trastevere' Basilica. It has a tranquil courtyard, and the inside is decorated with designs of musical instruments. Saint Cecilia is the patroness of music.
There is a beautiful marble statue by Stefano Maderno of how Cecilia was found when her tomb was opened, centuries after her death. Sounds gruesome, but it is as tranquil and beautiful as the rest of the place.
And you need some tranquility after seeing too much Baroque Rome.

Thanks Debora. Much appreciated.I Googled Corot. Yes very similar scenes. So my painting is sort of a copy. So maybe a talented local artist?

 

I'd think. Painting certainly has eye appeal.

I don't think so. Other than the location, I don't see a similarity, other than that it is a view of the Castel Sant'Angelo and the Saint Peter from across the river.
If you look at the angle, it looks like Corot's position was slightly higher, and Montesi sat lower, with a straighter view of the bridge. He probably sat closer to the water's edge. The boats are very different, as are the buildings on the riverbanks. The boats and the situation of the buildings are contemporary with the different periods the two paintings were painted in.

If you want to paint a view of both the Castel Sant'Angelo and the Saint Peter, you are likely to get roughly the same composition. Many artists have sat there with their easel, and many still do, simply to paint the view, not to copy earlier paintings. And why not, it is a beautiful view.
