I picked this up on eBay in the UK a couple of weeks back, for an excellent price, and it arrived today. I think it's adorable!

    It's an antique, solid silver (800) bombilla - or South-American mate-tea drinking-straw. I think it's really cute, and it's in fantastic condition!

The bulb strainer at the bottom unscrews, for easy cleaning:

No reason you couldn't except that it would be tough getting it through the holes! It's silver, so no buggies.

The strainer / filter at the base is to stop you from sucking up tea-leaves while drinking, and either clogging the straw, or choking on them! I think even if you unscrewed the filter, you'd have a hard time drinking a smoothie or milkshake through this!...But if you could - damn - that'd be the world's fanciest milkshake straw!!

These days, they're made of stainless steel, but since stainless wasn't widely available until the mid-20th century, the antique ones are made of silver. You can actually find them pretty easily online, but they do cost a bit of coin. I got lucky with this one. Even with postage from the UK, it was CHEAP. I love it!!

When spammers show up, they post to random threads. Of course, these posts are reported and removed, but people leave posts saying "spam" (or similar) so others will know that the spam has been reported. Those posts remain after the spam is gone. It can be confusing.
