    Hello

Hoping someone can help ID this silver brooch. Only mark is STERLING.

Apologies for the shoddy photos, I have just put my photography things away.

    4cm widest part. 9cm drop.

    Thanks

Judy is right (of course), it is a Norwegian sølje brooch. This particularly sølje brooch is called a Mary sølje, or something similar. @DragonflyWink can probably give the correct name.

The sterling mark makes me think it could have been made by Norwegian migrants, or possibly in Norway for export. Cheryl will know more about that too.
    You do, and I do.

A sølje brooch is not a marriage, but originally worn at a marriage.;)
The heart shape is related to Scottish luckenbooth hearts, it was once a common shape for jewellery throughout Europe. Søljes come in different shapes though.
The spoon-shaped dangles served as little mirrors to ward of evil. They are typical of many Norwegian søljes.

By the way, the reason I added "of course" after I wrote "Judy is right", is because Judy never just assumes something. When she identifies something, it is because she knows it to be so. That is Judy. And this is what I know to be so.:)

I've got a solje AND a few luckenbooths! Related, as aj says, in that both have hearts.

I am more familiar with Luckenbooths, but I have made a couple Norwegian Solje reproductions from this photo we found in a Norwegian town in Texas.
