Thanks everyone. All good leads so far, but without a mark all I can think of is the phrase "in the style of." Would this design be considered to be art deco or is there something more accurate?

good question. normally it's listed under Jugendstil. Amphora - what it is for me - had a style that you could call transitional after the pure Jugendstil, not yet deco and not completely liberated from pure Jugendstil - and yet not lost in to Bauhaus and Industrial like Behring etc..
here you see it better with the full name:

My 2 cents, which should probably be discounted down to about a fifth of a cent, is that a modern Chinese piece would be tidier. The incised lines on this one wander & wobble a bit & look hand etched to me. There is the look of crosshatching in places on the bottom. Does that say anything about production method?

Yes, but I'm sure it isn't. Some sellers are wishful thinkers.

The one on that link was made about five minutes ago, I reckon. I'm still voting modern Asian on this.

I know it's late, but replies used to go to my email inbox but for some reason that isn't happening anymore and so I assumed that there were none. Thanks for all of the ideas and suggestions. I'm still not sure what to think as far as who, what, when and where, but at least I now have some ideas. Thanks everyone.
