I'm going to continue with the thin line of thought regarding the sitter being La Goulue.

It's unclear to me if La Goulue began working with animals prior to her marriage to Joseph-Nicolas Droxler in 1900. Together starring in their the lion taming act.

The act ended in 1907, three years after this ...

So, how could a painting of a French entertainer end up being framed in Johannesburg? Perhaps as a souvenir of a grand time in Paris.

The 1900 Paris Exposition was held between April and November, and the South African Republic had a pavilion. The 1900 Summer Olympics Games were also hosted in Paris.

That's all that I can imagine.

    James.

One needs to be creative and open minded when searching. If a the straight facts do not yield results, find an alternate path. In this case what other painting has an Aubray label on it.

Lautrec does make La Goulue a blonde or redhead, but he does that with Jane Avril too, so maybe artistic license. This lady is definitely a brunette.

I noticed that too! In the off chance this is La Goulue, it’s certainly possible that she dyed her hair after her Moulin Rouge days… or perhaps let it go back to brunette? So many mysteries…
