(Meanwhile, do you remember the 7 degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon? I can only laugh, because he lived nearby when we moved to Litchfield County, CT in the mid-1990's, and I would run into him - and Ed Hermann - at the grocery store! Meanwhile, Meryl Streep used to come into the library where I worked then, and my daughter used to exercise Jane Curtin's horse! Laura Linney showed up at every cultural event in the area, and I could name half a dozen more "famous folks" I used to run into all the time...)

I didn’t see the wedding matchbook until after your initial story. I honestly did not think it was connected, but it was a delightful surprise. Without the Internet in this case, God only knows how many of us on this forum have crossed paths without knowing it.

At least now I don’t have to tested the matchbook for DNA.

I, too, kept thinking, "What are the chances?" as I looked at your little "collection" - but then I saw that some were from clients from my DC days, others were from trips I took, still others were brought back to me by a friend of my husband's who used to go to Las Vegas often, etc, etc - and THEN, the one from my own wedding venue! I'm still shaking my head, wondering how-the-heck????

nice to know you too. That said, it would be absolutely no problem at all to send these to you. Its not like I collect them(I don’t) they were just inside a vase we purchased, and it could make casual conversations over a glass of wine for you and your friends. Just say the word and they’re yours(free shipping and all).

 

Aw, thank you, MMarco. That's very sweet of you.

However, the reason I posted and sent them as a "give-away" (on this forum, actually) was because I've been trying to "lighten the load" over the past several years. I still have way too much stuff, and I know that my own kids have (and will have) no interest in much of it.

Anyway, someone here on the forum said that he collected matchbooks and would love to have them, so I sent them to him. I guess he must have sold them on in batches or something, and you eventually ended up with the ones you've shown here. (Yeah, well - so much for his "collection"!)

Suffice it to say that (despite the memories) I have already parted with these, so I don't need them back. I guess that maybe YOU can pass them on again. Just think about it: who KNOWS where they'll end up this time?

OTOH maybe he kept the ones he was interested in and unloaded the rest. I'm not sure I'd have kept one from a total stranger's wedding either. If I have the outer cover from my cousins', it's in the scrapbook.

BTW - here's the ring I found on Thursday. No marks at all other than the decorative stamping. There's a spot at the back made to size the ring down if needed. It tests out like 10k. It's probably a 7, so it's a bit big on me and I will probably sell it ... eventually....

The secret life of matchbooks. Who knew? Does it increase the value when there's provenance?

I remember a play Six Degrees of Separation.

Back when he was running for president I sometimes told people, a neighbor from my childhood, who did a portrait of me, also did the official portrait of Michigan governor George Romney, father of Mitt. If I run into any Mormons, maybe I can pull it out again.

 

I love the matchbooks story ! Many moons ago,I had a set of 3 figurines of an 18th century gentleman and lady sitting at a table playing cards that was given to me by a long gone ex. I carried those things around for many years,then a roommate decided to steal them (along with a bunch of other stuff) .I was devastated because i truly loved them. Fast forward to about a decade ago,and I was perusing ebay when I ran across a figurine that looked exactly like the one I had. I immediately bought it and when it arrived I was stunned to find pencil marks on the bottom,just like mine had ! I asked the seller where she got it and she said her mother had bought it in,get this,florida ! I asked about it on here and was told probably early 20th century,probably German. I know the odds are its probably not the one I lost,but the coincidences sure point to maybe.Id love to complete the set again,but a 1000 searches later...

 

October 2018 must be the month for finding Adam Jablonski handkerchief bowls in thrift shops. I want to thank all of you for your insights into what to look for. I was on my walk and wandered into a thrift shop and felt the silkiness of this glass. I turned it over and googled the signature and confirmed it was an Adam Jablonski. I love how the colors fade into each other. It's not the bargain, it is the feeling of adding a small treasure into my décor.

I don't think this one's actually Victorian, the edges haven't sharpened, but if it is no one ever wore it or didn't wear it for long. OTOH with it being unmarked...?

 

I don't normally do kitsch but this weathered guy reminded me of a visitor that sometimes appears in the wood duck house

The opening is 3-1/2 inches tall. I think spring is brown and fall is grey.

 

This is a really terrible photo of a visitor we had at our front door last year. I didn't want to use the flash because I was afraid it would scare or hurt him! He was a puffy baby and must have come out of his nest, we hear great horned owls all year long around our house

 

So: Portrait of you was painted by artist who did portrait of Governor George Romney, one of who's antecedents was a first cousin of George Romney, 18th C portrait painter, who did portraits of Emma Hamilton, who was mistress of Horatio Nelson.

So it doesn't take many degrees of separation at all to connect you to Lord Nelson.

 

Forget Nelson. A tie to Emma Hamilton! I beyond like your post. I'm always running into painting of Emma Hamilton as this, the or the other Greek goddess. Her husband, William Hamilton, has many connections to the world of engraved gems & is the one who brought the Barberini, now Portland, vase to England. I have spent a lot of time chewing over the imagery on it. (And am in the extreme minority camp who believe one side is Orpheus & Eurydice and that whole thing is a Renaissance fraud.)
