painting by karel Appel

hello antiquers, do you think guys that this is a real painting of karel appel done in 1981:

 

It is unfortunate that the artist's signature has been partially covered (?) by the frame. Edges of the color blocks are sloppy. I have no idea who Appel is, but I am not impressed.

What was written on the board, upper left on the reverse?

 

the artwork is not mine yet, its the property of a lady I found here online, the pictures I have is the one you see, and I asked here to give more photos and read that for me, from what I can read is r.appel or k. appel, I am not sure. the style of colors and shape is quite similar to k.appel but let's wait and see.
and appel has some artworks that are quite simpler than this one, so not all of his works are impressive, just as all artists do

 

It could be. I'm a bit concerned about Bourne Arts and the "commissioned paintings" language.

yes me too, I am wondering what a great painter should have to do with a commission, yes there are artist who do them, but for k.appel I am not sure, was he that famous and important in 81 that he wouldn't do this kind of work, or was commission something usual in the 80s. I looked for bourne arts and the only site that come out it this site called http://www.bourneart.co.uk/ but I am not sure how that is related to a painting done in the 70s just as the current owner told me

 

Let's start at the beginning. In what country is this work and what did the current owner tell you about it? Does s/he think it's the work of Karel Appel?

This doesn't appear to be karel appel style. The signature doesn't match up either. Its most likely by an unknown artist who was inspired by someone else.
