Are these Chinese or Japanese vases?

Hi all,

I recently bought these but I dont know if its Chinese or Japanese. They are very large in size.

Are they old or modern?

Very odd looking characters on that first one pictured. I suspect they may have been made in a third location.

 

They are likely Japanese, the lower two characters on the first close up of the base are '13' in Japanese numerals. Can't make out what the top character is though.

 

that was my first thoughts too. But had to ask to confirm.
Its a bit difficult to take pictures of the signature. maybe this one is better. any ideas on how old they could be.

I know that there is no hole in the bottom, but they sure look like lamp bases to me. The cut-outs in the foot rim would make for ease of an electrical cord to pass under the base.
