Actually i bought this foo dogs few weeks ago,and i think it has an unsual shape, since the base it hase some kind of old wax or gum i think,my best opinion,is this kind of brass foo dogs in the top of antique bronze vase?

the patina is full of their body,so i think it's already very old,1800s maybe, and maybe your opinion will enlightening me,thank you

Gorgeous, Silver. As you thought, they used to be on top of something else, maybe twin censers? I have also seen Japanese porcelain lidded vases with brass/bronze foo lions or dogs mounted on top of the lid.
If they were once on top of porcelain lids, the porcelain could have been broken and thrown away, the dogs kept for decoration. They are well made, and attractive enough to be nice objects in their own right.
They were artificially patinated. Not to fake, but as a decorative element. Some of the patina has worn off, and I do think your estimation of 19th century is correct.

I also think Japanese. The shape, execution, and the radiating (flower shaped) decorations on the backs all look Japanese to me.
But I have been surprised before with Japanese-looking Chinese items and Chinese-looking Japanese items, and they are neighbours after all.;)

    Hi Silver,
Has the resin or wax been placed inside the foo dogs after they were removed from a vase? The resi9n looks like it has been added to me. I only see one large piece of resin/wax on the stomach of the dog on the right, not on the left. Could hole beneath the top wax near the chest on both dogs have been what held them to a vase or whatever?
I hope my questions are clear. It's 5.00 here. :inpain:
