Featured Carved Cross

Could this be made of bone? Measures 2 1/4" x 1 1/4".

 

Does not look like bone to me. A closeup pic of the back at the bottom where there's some change to the color might be informative.

 

It looks more like that 1950s Japanese molded plastic to me. I've never seen a cross, but I've seen Japan printed on the back of more than one piece in a flower shape.

Eve, It doesn't look molded. There are no mold lines.

 

Mold lines are easy to remove.

 

It's plastic or it's ivory. I'm leaning toward latter. Impossible to say anything for sure from these photos. I see a lot of damage to the very delicate places.

Bron, I didn't even think about Ivory. I though bakelite or so.

 

My vote is Ivory! Could be celluloid. Run a bit of warm water over it and smell. That should tell you what it is.
