Thing is, if out in the country bamboo isn't that big a deal but if in urban area you might wanna tell dear ol dad about invasive qualities of bamboo, unless of course he does have a spare panda hanging around.

In Australia, we say Wombats, .... etc.

I think that bamboo with the darkened areas are called charred or burnt bamboo.

To be rid of the live stuff you just need a few friends:)

I know I'm late to the party here, but oh, yeah, bamboo...

The first house my husband & I bought was a tiny place in Bethesda, MD. We had a pretty yard UNTIL our next door neighbor planted a WALL of bamboo between his house & the one on the opposite side from ours.

That bamboo was on the other side of his property, yet the underground roots or whatever they were crossed his yard & tried to take over ours. Every morning, as I left the house to head to work, I would actually kick over every single shoot that had popped up in our front lawn overnight. It looked like asparagus, but no such luck! That stuff would appear overnight & grow 6" by morning!

We only owned that house for a couple of years, but I wonder if it now exists in a bamboo grove - or if the stuff completely took it over!

Just out of curiosity - why the dark areas? Are they purposely browned to make a more interesting color or is some bamboo just like that? Generally the only bamboo I've seen is straight up the light tan color with no real color gradation?

ETA: I see SIS answered my question. Sorry 'bout that.

Hmmm, dunno exactly, there are different kinds of Bamboo as well, I have some floors that are bamboo, some natural which is blond in color, some are dyed a reddish brown color. BTW, Bamboo is not a wood although it looks like it, it's actually in the "grass" family. Very popular in the flooring industry these days, very hard, much harder than oak for example and because it's a grass, very sustainable, easy & fast to grow.

I spoke to Dad today and told him about the problems with Bamboo.
He was a aware, he is very knowledgeable about horticulture, he even knows all the Latin names.

He said by the time his Bamboo becomes invasive he doesn't give a Rats A** as he won't be here.:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:
