Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The phrase has been translated a few different ways on the web. Also, at least three different families' crests use the "Praesto et Persto" motto. None of the ones I just found has anything close to that crest or coat of arms, though.

That's all I know, except that it is a beautiful find!

It's a lovely bowl. Lucky you!

I know almost nothing about crests however I do have a lone book with some examples of elements. If you have a name you can look up information but when trying to piece together the elements, not so straight forward. In addition the elements shown have variations mentioned once you have a name.

Anyway I was wondering if it might be the combined crest of more than one family, perhaps from a marriage. I don't actually know how it works.

Anyway, I found a three masted ship with just a few associated family names and an eagle with head turned with tons of family names. The eagle on the top looks the same as the eagle on the left to me but for the two stars. There are no examples of two stars shown on anything.

So from Fairbairn's Crests of the Families of Great Britain and Ireland.

If you are looking at the lower left quadrant, what looks like a tree stump is just tail of the eagle descending. Compare with the same eagle on the top. ;)

I see the inscription as FC to WB. There is the possibility this is the crest of an organization rather than a family.

    Or ETC to WB?

That is usually how coats of arms work, when they are divided such as this one is. I am not knowledgeable enough to know whether this is a crest or a coat of arms. I thought they were two different things (this was something an old friend of mine told me, long ago -- and he knows something about such things).

Can be difficult to firmly attribute armorials - the shield is impaled on this one, indicating a union, the left side would be the husband's coat of arms, in this case the eagle (as said, the same as the crest) is backed by horizontal lines indicating a blue field, and charged with a fess with stars; the wife's side is charged with a canton of crossed swords, or a sword and falchion (?)...

thank-you Cheryl, that is great information:) You have great eyes, it isn't 2 swords, just the one crossed with a falchion? (I don't what that is so will have to look that up):)

    lol Bronwen:)

I've had good luck having similar arms identified by Beacon Genealogical and Heraldic Research (beaconenquiries@googlemail.com). The last time I had it done it cost me 40 pounds, but it was well worth it.

I heard back from the College of Arms folks, the charge would be $200GPB to figure this out - I imagine it would take quite a bit of time to do this. If the bowl was part of my family, I would consider it, but since I'll be selling it on, a bit too much for me to pay. Here is their response:

Thank you for these images. There actually appear to be two coats of arms here, shown 'impaled' together on a single shield, which is a common way for the arms of a married couple to be shown (beneath the husband's crest).

I do not immediately recognise either of the coats of arms or the crest shown on this item, but if you would like me to I could conduct a search of the official College records in an effort to discover whether these designs have ever been officially granted or confirmed, and if so, when and to whom. My fee to conduct this search – which would involve manually extracting and examining any manuscript entries which the indexes to the records suggest may be of relevance to your enquiry – and to compile a written report summarising my findings, would be £200 GBP. Please note that this fee covers my time spent searching and writing my report; it does not guarantee that a positive identification will be made, though all relevant series of the College records will be thoroughly examined.

sorry SIS, I missed this line when I first read your post, you are correct:)

the fellow from the College of Arms said the same thing:)
