I thought this overlooked and underappreciated inkstand to be a wonderful example of American (New England) pottery.

    INKSTAND 001.jpg

The piece is missing its original well and the poetic backdrop acts as a writing utensil receptacle. Just a wonderful, wonderful example of Americana IMO.

    Thanks, Shi!

She reminded me a bit of those polychrome glazed Arts and Crafts figurines of the 1930s and earlier produced by the Overbeck sisters of Indiana that I seen on the Roadshow not too long ago. Although not as colorful compared to the sisters works, I thought the simplicity, uniqueness and overall quality of the piece is what makes it standout from the norm.........especially given the maker (a local woman from the New England area) had no formal training or established pottery studio. It appears from my research this is a one-off example produced by this talented woman in her spare time. Knowing this info, how does one classify it (Folk Art? Arts and Crafts? etc.) and place a proper realistic market value on such a piece? Something we've had trouble with over the years from time-to-time finding these "unique antiques" and works of art.

I'd call her classic folk art. She's a one-off by an untrained artist.

It was really a group effort, several boardies contributed.

Still the best dang thing I've seen discovered on any board...

Congrats on that frame Nuff that blue enamel stuff sells well huh?
Looks quite a bit older than the arts and craft frame of mine I posted a while back?
I have another with little tiny cloisonne corner pieces probably 60's though, not that old but I like some old frames.
Here is the arts and craft frame (I posted it before)
I searched for any kind of signature but ithas old backing glued all around the edges from years
I have a cute little vintage frame with cobalt mirror, which is also a love of mine

We were thinking this would be her classification, but wasn't 100% sure. Thank you! If I'm not mistaken, the seated female figure is a model of the maker herself?

@Shi, I don't recall the inquiry as it was a year or two before having any interest in ceramics, but I do recall the piece being floated about the Antiques Board over at the other place. It's very nice, roughly 90 years older than my stand and the price realized is awesome!. I doubt my example will see a fraction of that number.

@Sharona, thank you! Yes, that piece sold pretty well considering it needed some work done to bring it back to its full glory. Love those frames.....especially the first piece....very nice! Are you still drowning in jools? Lol! Sell anything as of yet?

The second frame is technically what's called guillochè enamel; the rose buds are classic. You can see the engine turning under the enamel too;cloissone is done with wires and enamels melted in between the lines. Guilloche doesn't have the lines. I'm guessing it dates to the 50s/60s from the metal and the way it's done.

And now for something completely different. I had to try getting the upload button to work (it always used to fail due to file size). These are a recent find - catalin salt and pepper shakers. The tops screw out with a butter knife back or whatever. Testing these was the first time I ever managed to raise the rotten milk smell with my thumb Catalin, just in case, is a European form of bakelite. 101_0021.JPG

Nuff I posted that ink well since your ink well remined me of the other well. When I first saw the heart ink well I thought it was a newer piece from Mexico? Then Skeezix floored me when he ID'd it as antique redware. So you just never know ;)

Circa William IV mahogany pole fire screen with its original tapestry and the paper backing..... not bad for £20 at a car boot sale.

I also picked up fifty costume jewellery brooches today, all vintage for twenty quid - there's a nice silver and amber one in there. Last week's bulk buy was about forty silk scarves for a tenner. The Versace one (which I am keeping!) made the whole lot free. ;)

Don't hog the sparkly stuff, Bear! That screen is a keeper; you couldn't find one like that here at any price. Found the necklace 101_0032.JPG this weekend and the bookmark last summer. Total price for two pieces of ivory? 25 cents. The quality on the beads isn't the greatest, but at that price who cares?
