My research shows the quote relates to the "Pharmaceutische Rundschau" published in New York 1883.

My guess would be that it is a medicine bottle. Not much help as to who made it.

But then, what do I know.

The image is of Wartburg castle, Germany.

This is an idle guess, but you might check the August Saeltzer factory. They did salt glaze stoneware and the name fits an AS monogram.

the inscription can be found on a number of pieces like steins and such. I did not think to do the translation as it can be googled. That was a nice bit of info on Wartburg castle I did not know.

MoS thanks for your insight. This has been baffling me and I will continue to study it. The estate had some real nice stuff in it, the people obviously had some nice ceramics and I figured this was something but...

the quote dates from the 1848 revolution when strict censorship by the authorities was pressed upon the population; many gone to prison for their free speech.
the connection to the Wartburg is of course Luther as the one and only German saint and liberator.
the clay-pit was rather small, too narrow to the old walls and ruins and only given to the family because they were involved in the restauration of the Wartburg.
the clay is obviously of mediocre quality.
for an eventual listing the stress should be put on Luther and the Wartburg.
