I have recently came across a very cool piece by an abstract artist thats pretty well known it seems. His name is Jason Craighead and i aquired a one of a kind framed piece that he must have fashioned for a friend or colleague. Its signed and dated so i dont know if that brings the value down or up but in all honesty i like the piece whether valuable or not. Local appraisal places seem like a scary ordeal to me due to the fact that i dont know anything about art and i would not want to waste their time nor pay to have them tell me something thats not worth hearing. So any help would be awesome. I am posting pictures. Thanks.

You don't really need a professional appraisal unless you are looking to insure it. I would Google around for different past auctions keeping in mind the medium (watercolour?), size and date it was painted. That will give you a ballpark about its value.

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

if the work is signed to someone special...it can increase the value...
if it's signed to someone else....unknown.....it can lower the value...

That is very cool, Norm, I like it a lot too! I think signature and date will never "devalue" a piece of artwork. Although someone may dislike a personalized inscription, I never mind them. I'm with Jeff, you really only need an appraisal if you want to insure it.

I am finding little in the way of a secondary art market sales record for this artist. Apparently, sales range from $375.00 - $4600.00.

    Search "jason craighead" (liveauctioneers.com)

He is well respected and well represented in the contemporary art scene. Your work does not resemble his current work. As such, I would think it would fall into the lower realm for his sales. Still a nice find and a piece that may well appreciate over time.
