There's a photographer named Levi Bettweiser from Boise, Idaho who is developing old film. It's called the Rescued Film Project. If anyone out there has any old rolls of film lying around, you can send it to them, they develop it and send you digital images. The caveat is that you must allow them to share the photos on their website. I have some that were in with my parents things that I'm going to send. Probably from the 50s & 60s. I have no idea what's on it. This is a great service.

Here is a "good" link - I don't know why the other doesn't work, but it didn't work from Google either.

My only "well, poop!" about it is that it appears that you only get a digital copy, but not your original negatives back.
Will have to think about that.

    sigh . . . I know I will end up doing it anyway. :D

Just type in rescuedfilm.com and it should come up. I wonder if the process destroys the negatives? I don't know how film is made into photos (don't really want to know.) It would be nice to see what's on the old rolls.

    Hi,
If I remember right he keeps the negatives so he will have copywrite to the photos in case some are really valuable. I found a roll that I had taken back in the 1949. I was on the Queen Mary. This was in the 1970s I took it to the university in my town who had a photography studio and they developed it for me there was only 11 photos on the roll, they charged something under 5 bucks. I did not want to take it somewhere were a machine does the work. I figured the school did their own developing.

Well, I'm pretty sure mine aren't valuable. My mother liked to take pictures of vases full of her garden flowers, the dog, the cat, them drinking beer at the pond. Lovely stuff. Mine would be teeny bopper pictures of bands I saw in the early 60s - Chad & Jeremy, Freddie & the Dreamers. You think there's going to be a run on those? LOL

You may think you're pics do not have value....but some just may, and to a guy who sells copies for commercial purposes , getting old pics for a song is a no brainer.

Oh, golly. I don't know of anyplace that develops old film around here. My local photographer is a friend and he's said it's a dying art.

    Hi Antidiem,
Some drug stores still develope film but use a machine that is not very nice in it's use. Old film sometimes breaks and the machine would mangle it. Most places since digital cameras do not offer developing. Old film needs to done by someone with the knowledge on how to handle it. It was funny when I was doing restoration work on the church I used black and white film since it would not lose coloring. When it was developed it was done at the drug store and came out green and white instead of black and white so I had to do them all over again.

I'd really like to get some of my parents films developed, but now you have me wondering about the ownership issue. I can't imagine anybody in rural NH in the 50s and 60s having any valuable photos. They never traveled beyond Old Orchard Beach, ME for a yearly vacation. Based on the existing photos I have of early 60s English groups, mine aren't going to be spectacular. Fuzzy, faraway shots taken at the Carousel Ballroom in Bedford, NH or Canobie Lake Park. I have Moulty & the Barbarians, Young Rascals, Turtles, Searchers, Dave Clark Five, McCoys. Can't remember any more. They're all pretty dim photos. LOL. Nobody today even remembers those guys.

Bev, one mans ceiling is another mans floor.
i see folks selling copies of photo's of all description on ebay alone.
They don't have to be worth a lot of money , just interesting enough for people to want to buy prints of the original.

So this guy would want the rights to copy them for commercial purposes.

My folks used to vacation in Old Orchard...with lots of Moms family

If this guy keeps the film I think its awful. What if down the line a better technique rolls along and you want more pics, also digital copies????? If he is getting millions of orders maybe he is recycling the film for the silver? Would have to be a HUGE lot to get any kind of profit?

I used to take my husband's Xray films to a place and was paid for the silver content.

    Hi,
I am sorry, the guy is doing a good thing. He is not charging for all his work. He is giving you a copy of the prints. He is holding the images in case someone might have a photo of someone famous doing an naughty act and he will make money on it. 99% of the stuff is going to be the usual family photos. If you want everything then you will have to find someone to do it for you. The guy is only offering a service. You have the choice.
