Featured It's been awhile, I have goodies!

Hi everyone!

Sorry I haven't been able to post much lately, it hasn't been for lack of effort. I've been finding little items here and there but today I finally got some good sized items. Went to a local thrift shop around the same time they are restocking the store. I saw one of the workers with a bin they were offloading on the shelves and I saw a bent compote that looked good. Picked it up, saw weighted sterling on the bottom and into my cart it went for $1.99. Went to a few more stores, and my last store I found this huge 900 silver dish. To find big silver is great, but to find big silver that is beautiful too is even better. I paid $2.25 for the dish (it weighs 404 grams!~). Everything else in the picture is my collection of randoms over the last month. The small plate is christofle (it's plated, but christofle has value). The spoon is latvian. Thanks for looking!

Thanks cxgirl, me too! I picked it up and usually I start by bending a dish a little to see how flexible it is. Copper plated stuff feels very stiff and rigid, and sterling (thin sterling) usually has a nice flexion to it. This felt somewhere in between the two, but then after closer inspection I could tell I couldn't use this flex method because it was made nice and thick. It didn't take me long to spot the nice 900 mark in the middle, thank you whoever decided to mark it this way because clearly the store wouldn't know what that means.

Yup, three times in the same spot scraping onto a testing stone (I have no doubt I would have gotten through any plated layer). It had all the right characteristics of old unpolished silver before I got my hands on it, but figured I might as well test to be sure since on a very rare occasion a 900 mark can be plated. I have no doubt it's 90% purity.

 

Good. It must have cleaned up well too.

Aaron, that's a perfect image, just perfect. When I'm in a store I'm scanning everywhere quickly so I probably look like I have crazy eyes....
