Side 1.jpg Hndl 1.jpg Bot 1.jpg Mrk 1.jpg Mrk 2a.jpg Monog 2.jpg Top 1.jpg Another piece of Grandma's sterling. It is marked 5581, 3 1/? pints. It is 6 1/8" tall at the side and 5 1/4" at the widest point. It has a beautiful monogram - letters?
Any help with maker, time period would be appreciated. It does have some dings and small dents.

Thank you Bakers. All I could see was a triceratops!:banghead:
Aquitaine, I have looked at the monogram, gone away and come back to it, trying to figure it out. I think it is 4 letters, too.

You're welcome, pat! Can you get a shot of the monogram straight on? It's tough to see on it's side like that.

OK, Here's what I came up with.....you know me, I like to play around.....and without DH around for a day or two, I have a wee bit of extra time on my hands....you will know if the letters I outlined are meaningful to you or not.....S-W-S-Z.....I did it in 3 colors and don't know if other than the first, they are in the right order or not...........I could also be off base.....you tell me!!

And doing it in colors was the ONLY way I could even attempt to make any sense of it!!!!

Even I cannot straighten out those initials, and I am usually fairly good. However, that just means anyone can use 'em!

As for dings and dents, if the object is beautiful enough, they add, as said above, "character." (If the object is ugly, they are "damage.")

Thanks, @Aquitaine ! I had the same S-W thought, but that second "S" and what you've outlined as a Z were throwing me. I can't make anything else of it, but I don't think I've ever seen a Z in this swirling script before.

Bakers, maybe the engraver hadn't done a Z before and was being creative???? I was being careful to only color lines I could see WERE connected!!! BUT, that doesn't mean I'm right either!!!! It's what I saw, that's all!!!

Well, I think you did a great job! The question for Pat is whether a Z makes any sense, given what she knows about her family tree.

Could it be just a design instead of a monogram ??? ... Joy.

Nope. Definitly a monogram. As for that Z -- I've seen PLENTY of them! My grandmother's married name began with a Z, and she had initials on all kinds of things. But oddly enough, not her flat silverware.
