Hello! I am new to collecting, and I wondered if you can legally buy and own ancient roman artifacts in the EU? If you can, I maybe get some links to some trustworthy links where I can look aground and maybe start my collection? Thank you in advance.

    Welcome Jakob.
You can buy and own Roman artifacts in the EU. Selling and shipping them to another country, even inside the EU, could be subject to permission from a national government agency. You may have to check that for where you are.

If you want to start collecting, do a lot of research first. Know what you should be looking for. Visit museums (when they open again), galleries (ditto), other collectors. Read books and study sites.

There are many fakes, and even reputable galleries and auction houses have been known to have fallen into the fakes trap.
Learn to use all your senses. Sometimes something looks good, but smells wrong, literally. Trust your gut feeling too.
But be prepared to get things wrong.

I can't vouch for any selling site, because so many have been known to make mistakes. The best is to make sure you yourself are safe, in the sense that knowledge is the best safety measure.;)

I don't collect Roman, btw, but my father was a historian/archaeologist (and more), and my parents had a small collection of Roman items.
I do collect certain items for which I study antiquities sites, and occasionally buy.

Jakob, I just thought of someone I trust, but I am far from an expert, so no guarantees.
She is an archaeologist and very knowledgeable. She has a (pricey) gallery in Amsterdam:

Welcome, Jakob. You posted this in Militaria. Is that what you are specifically looking for, or is your interest broader? It's a big field, All Things Roman.

Most of the ones I see offered for sale are a few years old. Not only Viking, but also Medieval, and old civilisations like Egyptian, Bactrian and Indus Valley.
When there is money to be made, people will make fakes, whether in fashion, smartphones, art or antiques and antiquities.
