Hello all. First post here on the forum. I picked up this chair for 40 dollars at an antiques mall to use as a project for my upholstery class. Seemed to have good bones and had been terribly re-upholstered at some point. When I began opening it up I noticed the nails were made using an old technique and it was partially stuffed with straw. Not any markings that we could find. Any info on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome Derek! The straw is probably original; it's what they used back when the chair was new. It's also probably a dust bomb. As someone else said, Eastlake chair so late Victorian (1880-something probably). This will look great with a funky upholstery job. The original was probably a darker velvet, but I've seen them done in mud cloth and Ikat; these chairs aren't currently desirable, so you can do whatever you want.

Hi Derek and welcome. I agree late Victorian, but could also be early Edwardian (1900). I see a few of these chairs in Australia, occasionally as a dining set. I wonder if the back upholstery is original? The chairs I've seen here seem to have this leather (or leather-like) fabric on the back and the seat. The seats are often buttoned as well, like the back. Your chair looks very regal. :)
