It seems there are many variations of this in the web. Ours was no bake. You had to chill with a weight on top, then flip it over. Lots of fresh whipped cream, and dabs of Jelly. :)

It’s just a fond memory now, as age has made me calorie and salt conscious.

    Da#% age! :joyful:

I used to think it was my mother's quick and easy answer to apple pie.....no crust to roll or apples to peel.:cat:

    We love it!

I don't ever remember having Zwieback w strawberries before.

    How were they prepared?

I didn't like them too much as a child.......only knew to eat them plain so never wanted any.

I only have memories of Farmor dunking them into her coffee.

Simple, just put slices of fresh strawberry on top. Some people like to add sugar, but I never do.
Beschuit is a bit lighter than zwieback, not as dense, thicker but more crumbly.

Beschuit sounds like it is much better. Certainly looks delish with the strawberries!

I’d love to know your thought process ‘Oh, that doesn’t taste good, never mind, I need a bookend’ :hilarious:

It wasn't eatable - it was hard as a rock. Actually, it kind of looks like that biscuit (Maybe a little shinier because of the shellac). I hope whoever cleans out my house does donate it, and it ends up here as a mystery item.

    Hi,
My Gram used to fry apple slices and stack them with strawberries for special breakfast treats.

We did an estate sale years ago; and found an amazing amount of odd items from a 1920 wedding. Included were the dress and Brussels lace veil wedding rings, groom's white suit, their "college pins" (when you pinned each other to go steady), wedding announcements, info about the shower and whom gave what gift, favors from the shower, newspaper clippings in the society page, and even a box with a piece of cake in it! ... everything EXCEPT a photo...not one!
