This is a little different in that it is obvious what it is, but I am wondering if there is more to the story? Was baking biscuits for a newborn a tradition at one time or common to a certain nationality? I've heard of baby teething biscuits, but obviously not for a newborn. Is this just a one time weird thing or does anyone know if there is some sort of tradition behind it? Thanks for any ideas.

That could win a prize for weirdness. Wonder why anyone would have ever kept it? :hungry:

Actually, I have one end of the first bread I ever baked. It was a complete disaster. It didn't rise; it was awful. I shellacked it and used it as a bookend. Don't call me weird. :wacky:

Oh, yes, obligatory when a baby is born.:)
But the beschuit is ready made, it is like round zwieback, the butter comes from a regular pack, and the muisjes (little mice:nailbiting::hilarious:) also come from a pack. The relatives of the newborn just put it all together when visitors come.

Beschuit (tastes perfect with fresh strawberries:happy:):

    :)

My grandmother used to make Zwieback applesauce cake. It was for my grandfather, who is Danish.

    It was delicious. :p

It is amazing how good beschuit/zwieback tastes with fruit, isn't it. Beschuit with fresh strawberries is a heavenly combo.

No, weird would be eating it. Luckily I'm on the Keto diet so because of the carbs I'm going to pass on tasting it. Maybe someone will find your shellacked bread bookend at a thrift store in a hundred years and wonder what the heck?

I'm going to have to find that or try to make it. There are two Dutch sisters nearby who sell Dutch baked goods out of their home. I made scallion pancakes recently and they turned out well. I'm in.

I see a Keto cheat day coming up soon. Just checked and the Dutch sisters haven't posted since January. I may contact them and see if they are still baking. It's great when things get set in motion. 117113101_115127423625664_5225425361504066107_n.jpg

Interesting about the Dutch tradition but the surnames on the card would indicate English & Irish backgrounds.

I was thinking the same thing but I know that since I submitted DNA to the ancestry site, a few things I had always been told and took for granted were turned upside down.

My mother used to make applesauce pie.....that's what we called it anyway. Crushed graham crackers mixed with butter and bit of sugar placed in a pie tin, applesauce added, topped with crushed graham mixture. Baked in the oven until set.........delish with vanilla ice cream.

@i need help...........your above post is the first of anyone else I've ever heard of that make similar. Could be Scandi.......Danish/Swedish.

Absolutely. Besides, The Netherlands don't have a tradition of children baking for the birth of a baby.
