Sorry, not 'designed', 'drawn' by. It's been a very long time since I took French.

Good eye! So decoration on the moon flask was lifted wholesale from an etching for which Girod did the drawing. Presumably by the same printer as the ones in the Brit.

I agree it's a transfer print. To me, it looks like it's an engraving.

The left signature is from a print from museum. I’ll post full pic.

This dog print is not at all similar to anything he apprenticed on. It’s just all confusing.

You're right, that's the word I should have used.

But notice it is the same handwriting as 'Gravé par Oortman. A label rather than a signature.

My thoughts are that it is either a detail from some larger composition, something happening in one corner of a painting, or that it is from a work more like a cartoon or caricature. I have tried using 'dogs' & 'chiens' in combination with names, no luck. There's always the possibility (gasp!) that it has not been put on the Internet, yet.

Sorry I'm a bit late to the party as usual. The French do have some interesting animal stories. There's a story called The Wolf and the Dog by Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695). In the story there's a mastiff that tries to convince a wolf to give up the hard life of the woods for the comfy and well fed life of a guard dog. He makes some progress until the wolf finds out he needs to wear a collar at night. I'm just wondering if something similar is going on here - a free dog as opposed home bound dogs. Just a thought.

If that's a mommy dog, as it appears, not sure 'free' is the right description.

Considering this again now, without dissecting and researching, overall doesn’t it seem odd for this decoration to be on this vase/flask?

I agree with Bronwen. I would expect a floral or a portrait but this scene is unusual.
But one never knows with the French...

Can you double check these circled areas?

Just random muck. No signatures or marks. These vases seem to be a bit of a mystery.
