I also find the smooth interior odd. How about a plunge router to remove the bulk of the wood, followed by sanding to remove the evidence, then a bit of gougework around the edges to give it that "handmade" look. It is obviously not a traditionally made piece.

Don't mean to interfere but had some masks similar to these less than 6 months ago and they were made by a group of Eskimos. I was thinking that they were an Alaskan Indian tribe called the Inuits.

    Thanks everyone x

I get the impression it was a home made project type thing, with no recognisable design as such, just someone's idea. But as I don't know what it is, it could be anything xx

I wouldn't be so quick to write it off as a tourist item. I had said originally that I thought it was the Inuits but I believe that it is a possibility that it a mask from their neighbors , the Yu"pik people of Alaska. I had people giving me a little bit of a razzing about my thinking that way but compare yourself. images.jpeg

Thank you Linny...I took a look. I can't really see any like mine with the BIG head thing and the really red lips/white face.
( I didn't ever really get the impression this was tribal, I just picked it up from a booty thinking it was someone's home project xx)

    There aren't.:)
There is no resemblance with Yup'ik masks, Inuit masks, or any other traditional masks made by Arctic peoples.

Just throwing this out there ..... my first thought was it’s someone’s version of a Noh mask.

My first thought was an Asian theater mask. Purchased somewhat similar one years ago, researched and it was a Chinese theater mask.

( JFTR I didn't ever think it was tribal,or for theatre.Just to make sure I looked at a few masks before I came here just to rule it out and was assured it wasn't)

I think it's a homemade project and I just wondered if anyone could tell me what the possible influences were xx

    Many thanks to all xxxx
