Someone wanted me to sell an asian teapot for them and i am trying to figure out what the marks mean. I cant figure out which way is up or down. I looked online for hours and there is so much info it gave me a head ache. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

    Thanks

Yes, it's a Yixing teapot, the mark is in ancient seal script, not kanji, so I can't translate it easily. @Op if you search for Chinese ancient seal script you can find websites that will help transcribe into kanji which can then be translated.

The teapot doesn't strike me as old, but Yixing is a specialist subject in it's own right.

Thank you and i am realizing how deep this subject is. I would of not thought how popular these actually were until i watched a few UTube videos. Another person locally thought it was not that old as well but thought it was well made. I have a new found respect for vintage pottery enthusiasts.

In the case of Yixing some new ones can be very expensive. There are cheap decorative ones and high end ones made by master potters using traditional methods.

Looks like there is another stamp underneath the lid i found. I dont think its the same type of stamp and its a little hard to read. Is it common to have different stamps? Lid.jpg

I don't know if it's common...but it is important to inspect for all makers marks present..

can you get a closer shot ?

It was really difficult to capture this clearly and the impression does not look as strong as the bottom of the pot.
