Cut glass bowl with odd pontil

Since I had the camera out, thought I'd ask if anyone is familiar with what company puts grooved lines in their ground and polished pontils.

This pale blue crystal bowl measures about 5 1/4" across and 1 1/4" high. The scallops are from parallel lines (miters?) of different depths cut into the bowl and the base is ground flat.

The pontil has been ground and polished and it has grooves cut into half of it (probably not the best description ... hope the pictures show what I'm trying to describe)

Thanks for any help ID-ing the maker.

You don't suppose that's a "design element" related to the groove pattern around the sides?

Hi Bakers! You mean just for this particular pattern? Hmmm ... hadn't thought of that but since it's so clearly visible maybe they did decide to pretty it up.

It's just a thought. Seems to me that it "goes" with the rest. Whereas, if the general decorative scheme was flowery for instance, it would really look out of place.

Oh gosh ... it just occurred to me that I got side-tracked by my desire to 'pick your brains' and forgot that this P,G,&P category falls under the Antique umbrella and this bowl isn't an antique (at least I don't think it is) ... Should I delete it and place it somewhere else? Is there a thread, other than 'Finds' that allows non-antiques? Sorry - I got carried away ... This is why I mainly lurk and don't type .... <sigh>

No, no! Do not worry about where you put it! Just because it says "Antiques" up there, does not make your choice inappropriate! It's glass - there is where it should be. :)

    Hi,
Perhaps it is his/her way of signing the bowl? WAG. I really love your bowl.

Josef Svarc did this sort of fancied up pontil. i don't think this is Svarc, mind, it's not signed. I do think it's probably Czech, especially with that kingfisher colour to it. And might be as early as the 1930s.

Thanks for the replies! I'll search in the direction of Czech glass and see what surfaces.
Ownedbybear - I like the name that you gave that color of blue "kingfisher" ... it really is a striking color ... is that an 'official' (or at least, a commonly used) name for that tone?

Those blues are often called kingfisher or sapphire here, depending on hue and depth. It's a common colour for glass made from about the 20s into the 50s - Whitefriars, for example, used it a lot. I like it - the glow makes it look fabulous against a light source.
