I don't even know where to start with this chair

I'm helping out a friend clear out her parents house. I don't know what to call this chair. It doesn't match any of the rest of their furniture and she has no idea where it came from. It shows up in old family photos from the 1940s, but thats all we have. I don't even know how to describe the back.

Replaced upholstery.

Time period roughly early 1900s.
I can't tell from the lighting in your picture, but it appears that someone may have tried to remove the old stain, leaving a reddish color to the wood.

Yeah, I'd say that's pretty close!

 

Ditto above. Style is not based on any historical precedent but, rather, a late Victorian concoction. The basic form has some similarities to a Roman chair but that back is pure fantasy.

 

Hi Nicole and welcome. I think verybrad really nailed it, but I have a question. You only posted one pic and more would have been helpful, but does it have three or four legs? I can't see clearly in the pic. 3 legs would mean its a corner chair and would explain the decorative high back which should be viewed against two corner walls.

 

Here's all the sent me. Next time they go out to the house I'll go with to get some better pics. I want to get a closer look at the construction where the back attaches. It almost looks like a completely different wood at the armrest connection

There are 4 legs, wider set in the front. Legs are saber style with no detail
